1. The Complete Works of Alberto Caeiro: Bilingual edition
Author: by Fernando Pessoa
Published at: New Directions; Bilingual edition (July 28, 2020)
ISBN: 978-0811227803
A bilingual companion to The Book of Disquiet, by Fernando Pessoa Here, in Margaret Jull Costa and Patricio Ferrari’s splendid new translations, are the complete poems of Alberto Caeiro, the imaginary heteronym coterie created by Fernando Pessoa, the Portuguese modernist master.
Pessoa conceived Caeiro around 1914 and may have named him loosely after his friend, the poet Mrio de Sa-Crrneiro. What followed was a collection of some of Fernando Pessoa’s greatest poems, grouped under the titles The Keeper of Sheep, The Shepherd in Love, and Uncollected Poems.
This imaginary author was a shepherd who spent most of his life in the countryside, had almost no education, and was ignorant of most literature; yet he (Pessoa) wrote some of the most beautiful and profound poems in Portuguese literature.
This edition of The Complete Works of Alberto Caeiro is based on the magnificent Portuguese Tinta-da-China edition, published in Lisbon in 2016, and contains an illuminating introduction by the Portuguese editors Jernimo Pizarro and Patricio Ferrari, some facsimiles of the original Portuguese texts, and prose excerpts about Caeiro and his work written by Fernando Pessoa well as his other heteronyms lvaro de Campos and Ricardo Reis, and other fictitious authors such as Antonio Mora and I.I.Crosse.

5. Dom Casmurro (Library of Latin America)
Author: by Joaquim M. Machado de Assis
Published at: Oxford University Press; Reprint edition (December 10, 1998)
ISBN: 978-0195103090
“A palm tree, seeing me troubled and divining the cause, murmured in its branches that there was nothing wrong with fifteen-year old boys getting into corners with girls of fourteen; quite the contrary, youths of that age have no other function, and corners were made for that very purpose.
It was an old palm-tree, and I believed in old palm-trees even more than in old books. Birds, butterflies, a cricket trying out its summer song, all the living things of the air were of the same opinion.” So begins this extraordinary love story between Bento and Capitu, childhood sweethearts who grow up next door to each other in Rio de Janeiro in the 1850s.
Like other great nineteenth century novels-The Scarlet Letter, Anna Karenina, Madame Bovary-Machado de Assis’s Dom Casmurro explores the themes of marriage and adultery. But what distinguishes Machado’s novel from the realism of its contemporaries, and what makes it such a delightful discovery for English-speaking readers, is its eccentric and wildly unpredictable narrative style.

Presented in the original Spanish, with excellent new literal English translations on facing pages, the passages have been carefully selected to capture the wonderful flavor and romance of the complete work. Readers will delight in scenes describing the comical manner in which Don Quixote was knighted, his valiant battle with the windmills (mistakenly perceived by the errant knight as giants), the misfortunes suffered by the undaunted knight and his squire at an inn, Sancho’s report of his meeting with the lovely Dulcinea, the fight with the wineskins, and much more.
Stanley Appelbaum, translator of this volume, has also provided an informative Introduction and ample footnotes, making this edition not only an enjoyable reading experience, but a valuable learning and teaching aid for students and teachers of Spanish literature.
9. The Dehumanization of Art and Other Essays on Art, Culture, and Literature (Princeton Classics)
Author: by José Ortega y Gasset
Published at: Princeton University Press (October 8, 2019)
ISBN: 978-0691197210
A classic work on radical aesthetics by one of the great philosophers of the early twentieth century No work of philosopher and essayist Jos Ortega y Gasset has been more frequently cited, admired, or criticized than his response to modernism, The Dehumanization of Art.
The essay, originally published in Spanish in 1925, grappled with the newness of nonrepresentational art and sought to make it more understandable to the public. Many embraced the essay as a manifesto extolling the virtues of vanguard artists and promoting efforts to abandon the realism and the romanticism of the nineteenth century.
Others took it as a denunciation of everything that was radical about the avant-garde. This Princeton Classics edition makes this essential work, along with four of Ortega’s other critical essays, available in English. A new foreword by Anthony J. Cascardi considers how Ortega’s philosophy remains relevant and significant in the twenty-first century.
10. Four Major Plays (Oxford World's Classics)
Author: by Federico García Lorca
Published at: Oxford University Press; 1st edition (January 15, 2009)
ISBN: 978-0199537518
In his four last plays (Blood Wedding, Yerma, The House of Bernarda Alba, Dona Rosita the Spinster) Federico Garca Lorca offered his disturbed and disturbing personal vision to Spanish audiences of the 1930s-unready, as he thought them, for the sexual frankness and surreal expression of his more experimental work.
The authentic sense of danger of Lorca’s theatre is finely conveyed here in John Edmunds’s fluent and rhythmic new translations that lend themselves admirably to performance. About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World’s Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe.
Each affordable volume reflects Oxford’s commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, voluminous notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.
