Many editions of John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress only have the first half, which follows the journey of Christian, written c.1678. They omit the second part, written c. 1684, where Christian’s wife, Christiana, follows her husband. This edition, however, has both parts together as a single volume.

Moreover, it contains the original illustrations by Frederick Barnard (which were engraved by the Dalziel brothers) and an index of Bible references Bunyan cited. These features allow the modern reader to experience the full weight of this classic allegory. Bunyan began writing this work while imprisoned for not obeying the state church in England.

Still, Bunyan considered life’s trials to be mild compared to the prospect of eternal separation from God. He reminds us that we are only pilgrims here; our home is elsewhere. To get there, we must mind our step.

Things didn’t go back to normal. At least not all of the way back to normal. It all started with the virus. At least that’s what grandpa says, I wasn’t even born then. He says that after the virus, America stopped being free.

That our freedom wasn’t taken away in a coup or a war, but in a whimper. We gave up our freedom out of fear and destroyed ourselves, just like Lincoln predicted. Regardless, after the virus, our freedoms were gone. We went from being a free state, to being a police state.

From governing ourselves to being ruled. Or at least some of us did. Inspired by the freedom theft of the COVID pandemic, this engaging medical thriller tells a story of what might come next. Through the eyes of the Liv Pope and her father, Dr. Silas Pope, a family fights for freedom, Christ, and their very lives from a government that is no longer for the people.
