8. Encyclopedia of Cryptozoology: A Global Guide to Hidden Animals and Their Pursuers
Author: by Michael Newton
Published at: McFarland; Reprint edition (October 24, 2014)
ISBN: 978-0786497560
On every continent and in every nation, animals unrecognized by modern science are reported on a daily basis. People passionately pursue these creatures-the name given to their field of study is cryptozoology. Coined in the 1950s, the term literally means the science of hidden animals.
When the International Society of Cryptozoology (ISC) was formed in 1982, the founders declared that the branch of science is also concerned with “the possible existence of known animals in areas where they are not supposed to occur (either now or in the past) as well as the unknown persistence of presumed extinct animals to the present time or to the recent pastwhat makes an animal of interest to cryptology is that it is unexpected.” This reference work presents a “flesh and blood” view of cryptozoology.
Here, 2,744 entries are listed, the majority of which each describe one specific creature or type of creature. Other entries cover 742 places where unnamed cryptids are said to appear; profiles of 77 groups and 112 individuals who have contributed to the field; descriptions of objects and events important to the subject; and essays on cryptotourism and hoaxes, for example.
9. Lichen Dyes: The New Source Book
Author: by Karen Diadick Casselman
Published at: Dover Publications; Revised edition (November 2, 2011)
ISBN: 978-0486412313
Lichens are curious plants, composed of fungi and algae that often resemble splotches of paint peeling from rocks or wood. They have been used to create brilliant, versatile dyes for over 4,000 years. In this comprehensive guide based on 25 years of meticulous research, noted textile designer and lichen expert Karen Casselman explains how to create and use dyes derived from these unusual plants.
The text begins with a fascinating history of such Asian and European lichen pigments as Phoenician purple, Roman murex, Florentine orchil, and Norwegian korkje. Consideration of Scottish, Irish, and Scandinavian domestic lichen dyes follows, as well as those used in colonial America.
Also discussed at length are safe dyeing methods, with special attention to equipment and preparation of the fiber; ecologically sound dyeing techniques and the use of mordants (substances used to fix dyes); lichen identification; and more. A final section includes charts of lichen dye names and ingredients, additives and alternative mordants, international field guides, useful bibliographies, indices, and other information.

13. Reading Lyrics
Author: by Robert Gottlieb
Published at: Pantheon; 1st edition (November 21, 2000)
ISBN: 978-0375400810
A comprehensive anthology bringing together more than one thousand of the best American and English song lyrics of the twentieth century; an extraordinary celebration of a unique art form and an indispensable reference work and history that celebrates one of the twentieth century’s most enduring and cherished legacies.
Reading Lyrics begins with the first masters of the colloquial phrase, including George M. Cohan (Give My Regards to Broadway), P.G. Wodehouse (Till the Clouds Roll By), and Irving Berlin, whose versatility and career span the period from Alexander’s Ragtime Band to Annie Get Your Gun and beyond.
The Broadway musical emerges as a distinct dramatic form in the 1920s and 1930s, its evolution propelled by a trio of lyricistsCole Porter, Ira Gershwin, and Lorenz Hartwhose explorations of the psychological and emotional nuances of falling in and out of love have lost none of their wit and sophistication.
Their songs, including Night and Day, The Man I Love, and Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered, have become standards performed and recorded by generation after generation of singers. The lure of Broadway and Hollywood and the performing genius of such artists as Al Jolson, Fred Astaire, Ethel Waters, Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, and Ethel Merman inspired a remarkable array of talented writers, including Dorothy Fields (A Fine Romance, I Can’t Give You Anything but Love), Frank Loesser (Guys and Dolls), Oscar Hammerstein II (from the groundbreaking Show Boat of 1927 through his extraordinary collaboration with Richard Rodgers), Johnny Mercer, Yip Harburg, Andy Razaf, Nol Coward, and Stephen Sondheim.
