A fifteen-year-old boy is walking through a swirling fog on his way to school when a voice calls out, “Come here. We need to talk.” Out of the mist emerges an old man with a white beard. He is a fantastic figure, as wizardly as Merlin, as wise as Socrates, as peaceful as Buddha.

Whoever he is, the old man has appeared on that very day to change the boy’s life. “You are old enough to learn about things,” he says mysteriously. “And who is going to teach you but me?” The old man gives the boy four days of “soul training,” a time of riddles, tricks, parables, and incredible twists that brings out surprising answers to each of four burning questions about spirituality: Do I have a soul?

How do wishes come true? What is the supreme force in the universe? How can I change the world? “The old man with the white beard showed me the spiritual side of life,” writes Deepak Chopra, “where real passion and excitement come from.

So before you begin, take a deep breath. This story could turn out to be yours.”

5. Mahaviri: Hanuman Chalisa Demystified

Author: by Nityananda Misra
Bloomsbury India

The Hanuman Chalisa authored by Goswami Tulsidas is one of the most popular Hindu devotional hymns. The ‘Mahaviri’ Hindi commentary (1984) by Swami Rambhadracharya has been acclaimed as the best treatise on the Hanuman Chalisa. This book presents an annotated and expanded English translation of the ‘Mahaviri’ commentary by Nityanand Misra.

Each of the 43 verses of the ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ is explained in three stages. The first phase being a word-for-word translation to help the reader understand the literal meaning of each word in a verse. The second is a simple English translation of each verse.

This third and final phase is an informed commentary on the true meaning of the verse, explaining the deep essence of the text with citations from authoritative Hindu scriptures (the Vedas, Upanishads, Puranas, Ramayana, Mahabharata, Gita, etc. And other works of Goswami Tulsidas.

All such citations are also translated into English. Following the commentary, Misra also provides five useful appendices for advanced readers. These include more than 120 endnotes (annotations), a detailed note on the prosody and rhythm of all the verses for chanters, the musical notation of the traditional melody of the Hanuman Chalisa for devotional singers and instrumentalists, and two alphabetical indexes for all words and verses used in the hymn.

6. Papa Don't Pope: Why I'm Not Roman Catholic (and Why the Future is Protestant)

Author: by Douglas Wilson
200 pages

View on Amazon

Papa Don’t Pope evaluates some of the most important issues between Roman Catholics and Protestants, including personal interpretation, apostolic succession, sola Scriptura, and so on. So this little book should be a huge help for anyone (Catholic or Protestant) with honest questions, as well as for anyone looking to interact with the original Protestant vision.

But what’s the point in stirring up differences between Geneva and Rome? Don’t we have enough division over church and theology already? The truth is, we don’t have nearly enough clear disagreement-because clear disagreement is a necessary step on the way to agreement.

So you could say this book has a catholic purpose (even if the future is clearly Protestant). The classical Protestant expression is Soli Deo Gloria. Roman Catholics might prefer Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam. May God hasten the day when we can say ‘amen’ to both.

OUR daily life creates our symbol of God. No two ever cover quite the same conception. It is so with that symbolism which we know as language. The simple daily needs of mankind, seem, the world over, to be one.

We look, therefore, for words that correspond in every land. Yet we know how the tongue of each people expresses some one group of ideas with especial clearness, and ignores others altogether. Never do we find an identical strength and weakness repeated: and always if we go deep enough, we can discover in the circumstances and habits of a country, a cause for its specific difference of thought or of expression.

In the North we speak of a certain hour as twilight, implying a space of time between the day and night. In India, the sane moments receive the name of time of union, since there is no period of half-light,the hours of sun and darkness seeming to touch each other in a point.
