Author: by David Spiegelhalter

ISBN: 978-1541618510

The definitive guide to statistical thinkingStatistics are everywhere, as integral to science as they are to business, and in the popular media hundreds of times a day. In this age of big data, a basic grasp of statistical literacy is more important than ever if we want to separate the fact from the fiction, the ostentatious embellishments from the raw evidence – and even more so if we hope to participate in the future, rather than being simple bystanders.

In The Art of Statistics, world-renowned statistician David Spiegelhalter shows readers how to derive knowledge from raw data by focusing on the concepts and connections behind the math. Drawing on real world examples to introduce complex issues, he shows us how statistics can help us determine the luckiest passenger on the Titanic, whether a notorious serial killer could have been caught earlier, and if screening for ovarian cancer is beneficial.

The Art of Statistics not only shows us how mathematicians have used statistical science to solve these problems – it teaches us how we too can think like statisticians. We learn how to clarify our questions, assumptions, and expectations when approaching a problem, and – perhaps even more importantly – we learn how to responsibly interpret the answers we receive.

3. Dice Games New and Old: How to Play Dice Games – Over 50 Including Craps

Over 50 games that anyone can play; learn to play on your own or take money from your family! Thrash close friends into eternal submission, then play to win new friends! Joking aside, this book will open your eyes to a world of enjoyment.

Dice games are great fun for all the family and can be played anywhere, at any time with no need for computers or batteries. From royalty and nobility, the passion for dice spread to all social levels. And gambling with dice has ruined Chinese scholars, North American Indian braves and Italian noblemen, as well as affecting the lives of the Canterbury pilgrims, according to Chaucer, and the gutter-friends of the poet Villon.

Ivory, gold and silver dice in the world’s museums are evidence that dice games have been discovered in every country and at every epoch. Knucklebones and dice are among the games that have survived, with modifications, from prehistoric times right up to the present day.

William Tredd has collected dice games from many nations for this book, but he has also invented new games which are published here for the first time, including his celebrated World Cup Football’ and Melbourne Three Boards’. Everyone possessing a few dice will want to try out these original, occasionally educational, and often amusing pastimes with their family and friends.

Forget about everything you have learned about craps strategy, especially the part about only placing bets below the 2% house edge. In theory staying below the 2% house edge should be the way to bet. It’s the safe, logical way but not the winning way.

I know this because I used to believe in this theory. I’m sure you are using this strategy when you’re at the table. After all this is the predominant strategy you find in most books and online. The fact that you’re entertaining the purchase a book on strategy tells me the 2% edge has failed you as well.

So what changed my mind? Simply that I found myself on the losing end of just about every session I played. Normally I would lose most of my money and if I managed to pull off a winning session the gain was minimal.

My love of the game kept me coming back even though I was a loser. Through it all each time I played I revised my strategy until I developed the strategy I use today and have used successfully for the past twenty-five years.
