4. Chasing Chopin: A Musical Journey Across Three Centuries, Four Countries, and a Half-Dozen Revolutions
Author: by Annik LaFarge
Published at: Simon & Schuster (August 11, 2020)
ISBN: 978-1501188718
A modern take on a classical icon: this original, entertaining, well-researched book uses the story of when, where, and how Chopin composed his most famous work, uncovering many surprises along the way and showing how his innovative music still animates popular culture centuries later.
The Frdric Chopin Annik LaFarge presents here is not the melancholy, sickly, romantic figure so often portrayed. The artist she discovered is, instead, a purely independent spirit: an innovator who created a new musical language, an autodidact who became a spiritually generous, trailblazing teacher, a stalwart patriot during a time of revolution and exile.
In Chasing Chopin she follows in his footsteps during the three years, 18371840, when he composed his iconic Funeral Marchdum dum da dumusing its composition story to illuminate the key themes of his life: a deep attachment to his Polish homeland; his complex relationship with writer George Sand; their harrowing but consequential sojourn on Majorca; the rapidly developing technology of the piano, which enabled his unique tone and voice; social and political revolution in 1830s Paris; friendship with other artists, from the famous Eugne Delacroix to the lesser known, yet notorious in his time, Marquis de Custine.

Author: by Serge Rachmaninoff
Published at: Dover Publications (July 1, 1988)
ISBN: 978-0486256962
The 24 preludes and 17 etudes-tableaux of Serge Rachmaninoff include what are possibly his finest compositions for solo piano. Each of these masterly works is included in this complete collection, reproduced from recent, authoritative Russian editions. They include: Prelude, Op.3, No. 2; Ten Preludes, Op.
23; Thirteen Preludes, Op. 32; Eight Etudes-tableaux, Op. 33; Nine Etudes-tableaux, Op.39. Among these are the enormously popular C-sharp minor prelude, Op.3, No. 2; the G-minor prelude, Op.23, No. 5; and the B-minor prelude, Op.32, No. 10 classics that have made Rachmaninoff one of the most performed and recorded modern composers.
Each of these works reflects Rachmaninoff’s emotional intensity, his thrilling gifts as a melodist and his ability to crystallize perfectly a particular mood or sentiment. In their sonorous textures and rich embellishment, they reflect as well his sovereign command of keyboard technique and his spectacular gifts as a pianist (he was one of the very greatest pianists of the 20th century).
9. Complete Etudes for Solo Piano, Series II: Including the Paganini Etudes and Concert Etudes (Dover Music for Piano)
Author: by Franz Liszt
Published at: Dover Publications; Reprint edition (January 1, 1989)
ISBN: 978-0486258164
Liszt’s reputation as perhaps the greatest pianist of all time is powerfully supported by his dazzling body of work for solo piano. The undiminished popularity of his etudes with pianists and audiences alike have made them among the most performed and recorded works for solo piano in the romantic repertoire.
This superbly produced yet inexpensive two-volume edition presents all of Liszt’s etudes as edited by the great pianist, composer, and musical scholar Ferruccio Busoni for the Franz Liszt Society and published by Breitkopf and Hrtel in Leipzig in 191011. This second volume, Series II, includes many of Liszt’s most important piano works.
Liszt’s creative method can be observed in his reworking of the Etudes d’ Excution Transcendante d’aprs Paganini into the Grande Etudes de Paganini (better known as simply the Paganini Etudes), and the similar revision of the “Morceau de Salon” into “Ab Irato.” The separate etudes cover a wide stylistic range, from the dazzling technical display of the most popular of the Paganini Etudes, “La Campanella,” to the graceful, restrained lyricism of “Waldesrauschen.” Each will bring to pianists and their listeners a moving encounter with the genius of this towering musical personality.
10. La Campanella (Kalmus Edition)
Author: by Franz Liszt
Published at: Alfred Music (March 1, 1985)
ISBN: 978-0769258812
This virtuosic piece, commonly known as one of the most difficult in piano repertoire, was written by Franz Liszt in 1838. It is based on the last movement of Paganini’s second violin concerto. Liszt was a great fan of Paganini and after hearing one of his performances decided to become the equivalent of Paganini on the piano.
He took six of Paganini’s original compositions and transformed them into virtuosic etudes for piano, of which “La Campanella” is third in the set of six and is sometimes referred to as No.3.
11. Gymnopédies, Gnossiennes and Other Works for Piano (Dover Music for Piano)
Author: by Erik Satie
Published at: Dover Publications (June 1, 1989)
ISBN: 978-0486259789
In his piano works especially, Erik Satie (18661925) was a witty musical caricaturist. The eccentric French composer loved to satirize academic rules in general and the impressionistic titles of Debussy’s compositions in particular, giving his own works such surrealistic names as Pieces in Pear Form and Dried Embryos, and annotating them with equally bizarre musical directions: “Tres ‘neuf heures du matin” (Very “nine in the morning”), “Corpulentus” (Corpulent), and so on.
His comic spirit is equally embodied in the music itself, as this delightful selection of seventeen piano works amply proves. They are as spare, lively, and capricious as they are hauntingly melodic. In addition to the well-known Gymnopdies and Gnossiennes, the pieces reproduced here include Sarabandes, Pices froides, Poudre d’or, En habit de cheval, Morceaux en forme de poire, Embryons desschs, Aperus dsagreables, Descriptions automatiques, and more.
This volume, the largest collection of Satie’s piano works yet published, has been reprinted on fine-quality paper from authoritative original editions, and sturdily bound to provide you a lifetime of study and enjoyment. In its pages are some of the most original and appealing achievements of a turbulent era in music, compositions that influenced such modern masters as Ravel, Milhaud, and Poulenc.

ISBN: 978-0739022122
This 223-page edition is comprised of 86 different technical exercises composed by Liszt during 1868 to 1880. Liszt intended these highly challenging exercises to build greater performance skills in virtuoso pianists. 15. Complete Etudes for Solo Piano, Series I: Including the Transcendental Etudes (Dover Music for Piano)
Author: by Franz Liszt
Published at: Dover Publications; Reprint edition (January 1, 1989)
ISBN: 978-0486258157
Liszt’s reputation as perhaps the greatest pianist of all time is powerfully supported by his dazzling body of work for solo piano. The undiminished popularity of his etudes with pianists and audiences alike have made them among the most performed and recorded works for solo piano in the romantic repertoire.
This superbly produced yet inexpensive two-volume edition presents all of Liszt’s etudes as edited by the great pianist, composer, and musical scholar Ferruccio Busoni for the Franz Liszt Society and published by Breitkopf and Hrtel in Leipzig in 191011. This first volume, Series I, includes many of Liszt’s most inspired piano works.
The Etude en 12 Exercises and the 12 Grandes Etudes can both be regarded as early versions of the Etudes d’ Excution Transcendante (Transcendental Etudes). Each set is a highly successful work in its own terms, and both generally surpass the famous final version in difficulty.
The separate “Mazeppa” is yet another working of one of the etudes from these sets. The individual etudes range dramatically in style from the delicate refinement of “Feux Follets” to the startling bravura of “Wilde Jagd” (both from the Transcendental Etudes).
